Scholarship: Jim Johnson Scholarship
Description: On behalf of the High Plains Chapter of the National Weather Association, the $500 Jim Johnson Scholarship is available to high school seniors who will be pursuing a career in one of the physical sciences (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, as well as Earth Sciences including geology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, and soil science). The scholarship is also open to those going into the teaching profession in the physical sciences.
The student must be attending a high school in the forecast and warning area of one of the following National Weather Service Offices; Dodge City and Goodland Kansas, as well as North Platte and Hastings, Nebraska.
The following Nebraska counties are in an eligible area: Adams, Arthur, Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Buffalo, Chase, Cherry, Clay, Custer, Dawson, Deuel, Dundy, Fillmore, Franklin, Frontier, Furnas, Garden, Garfield, Gosper, Grant, Greeley, Hall, Hamilton, Harlan, Hayes, Hitchcock, Holt, Hooker, Howard, Kearney, Keith, Keya Paha, Lincoln, Logan, Loup, McPherson, Merrick, Nance, Nuckolls, Perkins, Phelps, Polk, Red Willow, Rock, Sheridan, Sherman, Thayer, Thomas, Valley, Webster, Wheeler, and York
Scholarship Application Requirements:
(1) Applicant will provide proof of acceptance to a college with a physical science major.
(2) Applicants will write a one-page essay stating what they plan to do in the physical sciences once they receive their degree, and how it will contribute to their discipline.
(3) The essay format should be in 12-point font, double-spaced.
(4) Application deadline is April 30th.
(5) Scholarship will be awarded around May 31st.
(6) Scholarship is non-renewable.
